Which Protein to Choose. Part 4

One of the joys of raw feeding is the variety you can offer your dog — rotating proteins keeps mealtimes interesting and ensures a broad spectrum of nutrients. But if you're just starting out, or your dog has a sensitive stomach, knowing which protein to choose first (and why) makes a real difference. Here's our guide to the most popular raw proteins and what makes each one special.

Why Protein Variety Matters

In the wild, dogs would naturally eat a wide range of prey animals. Rotating proteins in a raw diet mimics this variety, helping to prevent food intolerances from developing, broaden the nutritional profile of the diet, and keep your dog genuinely excited about mealtimes. That said, when starting raw or introducing a new protein, always stick to one protein at a time for at least two weeks so you can identify any sensitivities.

Beef

Beef is one of the most popular and nutritionally rich proteins in raw feeding. It's high in protein, iron, zinc, and B vitamins — particularly B12, which supports nerve function and energy metabolism. Beef also contains a good balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, supporting coat health and reducing inflammation.

Best for: Most dogs. A brilliant all-rounder and a great starting protein for dogs new to raw.

Worth knowing: Beef is a relatively common allergen in dogs with food sensitivities, so if your dog has known allergies, it may be worth starting with a novel protein like duck or venison instead.

Chicken

Chicken is the go-to protein for dogs new to raw feeding, and for good reason. It's lean, highly digestible, and gentle on the stomach — making it ideal for dogs transitioning from kibble, those with sensitive digestion, or puppies starting their raw journey. Chicken is rich in protein and provides a good source of glucosamine from the bone content, which supports joint health.

Best for: Sensitive stomachs, puppies, dogs new to raw, and those needing a lower-fat option.

Worth knowing: Chicken is one of the most common protein allergens in dogs. If your dog has a known chicken sensitivity, opt for a novel protein instead.

Lamb

Lamb is a naturally rich, flavourful protein that most dogs find irresistible. It's higher in fat than chicken, making it a great choice for active dogs, working breeds, or dogs that need to maintain or gain weight. Lamb is also an excellent source of iron, zinc, and vitamin B12, and is considered a novel protein for many dogs — meaning it's less likely to trigger existing food sensitivities.

Best for: Active dogs, dogs needing to gain weight, and dogs with chicken or beef sensitivities.

Worth knowing: Because of its higher fat content, lamb may not be the best choice for dogs prone to pancreatitis or weight gain. Introduce gradually if your dog isn't used to richer foods.

Duck

Duck is a fantastic novel protein — rich, flavourful, and less commonly found in commercial dog foods, which makes it an excellent choice for dogs with food allergies or intolerances. It's higher in fat than chicken but packed with iron, selenium, and B vitamins. Many dogs that struggle with more common proteins do brilliantly on duck.

Best for: Dogs with allergies or intolerances to common proteins (chicken, beef), fussy eaters, and dogs needing a nutrient-dense option.

Worth knowing: Duck's higher fat content means it's best introduced gradually, particularly for dogs with sensitive digestion.

Which Protein Should I Start With?

If your dog has no known allergies, chicken or beef are the ideal starting points — widely available, well-tolerated, and easy to source. If your dog has sensitivities, start with a novel protein like duck or venison and introduce others one at a time.

Once your dog is settled, aim to rotate through at least 3–4 proteins over time for a well-rounded, varied diet. Your dog's coat, energy, and digestion will thank you for it.
